To cut a long story short, the band has been gigging for the past 12 months and its going great and our last gig we had John Ward (who was in Saxon, and been in bands with slash from [guns n roses], sang with Dio) got on stage and sang with us which was absolutly fantastic. But anyway weve not done a bad job and all this time we did it without a backdrop

Well anyway today i decided it was my mission to rectify this and so here we go........

First off i decided to try and find some black material, so i went to a few shops and bought for £9 a black kingsize bed sheet which is roughly 2.5 meters squared, ideal size as i was originally after anything from 2 to 3 meters wide and 2 meters high. Ooh Did i mention that im doing this on a real tight budget . Well ok i got the material and next i decided i needed some green paint. so a quick phone call to my mate Sutty (he has done a few backdrops before and used to do signwritting) recomended that i try and find some acrylic paint from Homebase, B&Q etc type shop. As Homebase is closest to where i was, off i headed in search of the paint....

And i found these hobby paints at £2.99 a jar so i decided i would probably need 3 tins just to make sure. They wasn't acrylic, but seemed about the best suited for what i needed. (Also i didn't have much time to travel round different shops). Anyway i also bought a stencil brush and i was ready to rock and roll......

Ok so now im at home and decided to get started making my back drop.

First off i made some space where to do the painting and to put together my stencil. To make the stencil i pestered Dan to get a link to Rasterbator as i couldnt remeber what it was called or where the hell it was. Rasterbator as you can see allows you to print out images using many pieces of paper to make a large picture (ideal for making a stencil i thought) and it worked brilliantly. I got the picture for the text and uploaded it set it to the size i wanted and printed it out.

After i printed it out and cut out the WageR text and then i put it together by cutting the bottom and right over hangs and stappled the seperate pieces of paper together. And then layed down and secured it to the sheet using gaffa tape. I made sure everything was where i wanted it and then i layed some old newspapers out on the floor to make sure i don't end up with WageR across the bedroom floor. (Lol would you imagine what my missus would do to me lol)...

Ok so now the floor is covered and protected from spills or the enevatable bleed through. (The carpet is safe, well it had better be or else im homeless hehehe) Right then the material and the stencil are all in place and everything is set for me to start painting. One quick check of the instructions and away we go. Hmmm the first coat goes on and it doesnt look very green so ive let it dry and applyed a second coat. Now it is looking a lot greener but still no where near as green as i would like.

Coat number 3 and its green woo hoo (and so far the carpet is still quite safe yay, im not sleeping in the car tonight whoo hoo) edit i just actually went and had a look to make sure and everything is a ok...

Ok then im now up to coat 3 and im waiting for it to dry so i can apply coat 4 and then leave it overnight.

So here we go some photos of what ive been upto this evening

1. The text is what i want to use for the backdrop so ignore the green background.

2. Guilotining the paper so i could put the stencil together properly.

3. Next i cut out the WageR text from the individual pieces of paper being very careful not to loose the order of the paper.

4. I then decided to staple the stencil together firstly line by line as it kept everything in order nicely.

5. Once i had all my lines stappled together i then stappled the lines together. No laughing thank you.....

More photos to come .......

and then a verdict on wether ive wasted most of the day and the £25 its cost me in material, paint, brushes and turps.
'tis looking fandidliastic so far :]
Ok then i have let it dry over night and applied a couple of coats to it today and let it dry.

Well without further ado here is my WageR Backdrop (ok where the stencil lines are on the g,e & R need a little touching up) Im very pleased how this has turned out and the only thing that awaits now is a gig which will be this thursday.

So have i wasted £25 and my time or was it worth it?
Kaz was right about those stencil lines then, Al.........?

She warned you..........but you took no notice of her. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Eh well im happy with it all i was saying was that i have to touch up those lines where i had to leave bits of paper for the middle of the a,g,e and R

Ok so there was a little bleed over in a couple of places but i think if i had been a little more careful in the first place those would have been more avoided but from a distance you wont see it Smile
I think it looks great.I know how much hard work it was.Well done Al :]
I thought we weren't supposed to mention your middle age lines ;]
Lets not discuss the middle age lines, but all that hard work for first attempt was worth it, pity I shalln't see it until Friday and you haven't wasted £25 but you are a cheapskate.
